News update: Estero River Canoe & Kayak Regatta happens this month
[imagefield:left:0]The 17th annual Estero River Canoe & Kayak Regatta is slated for Sunday, Jan. 23, at Estero River Outfitters with two new features this year:
A two-mile Stand-Up Paddleboard class is planned.
Free canoe and kayak use will be offered to the first 20 pre-registered racers.
The race will serve as a fund-raiser for Josh Stuller, whose injuries from a past ATV accident leave him in need of funds to convert a van for disabled-access transportation. Josh is the son of owner Paula Stuller.
The race has a noon check-in at Estero River Outfitters, 20991 South Tamiami Trail, Estero, FL 33928. The start is at 1 p.m. downstream. Course offerings include a 4-mile recreation route or a 10-mile competitive race, which will go to Mound Key, tides permitting. Both are on the Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail. Registration is $20 in advance or $25 day-of and includes a t-shirt and lunch.
At least 50 paddlers are expected; the race is included in the Florida Competition Paddlers’ Points Race Series. The public can view the race for free from Estero River Outfitters or with park admission at Koreshan State Historic Site.
To sign up for the free canoe or kayak use, mention you’ll need a boat when you call to register at (239) 992-4050.
