From the mouths of babes

July 27, 2009

Kids often state the obvious. Sometimes they say it best. Kayaking kids are no exception.

As part of my blueway coordinator job, I’m a certified kayak instructor. Often, Lee County Parks & Recreation staff asks me to help out with summer camps. On Friday, I went to the San Carlos pool and the Lehigh Acres pool where Junior Life Guard sessions are happening. The point: Tell them about the blueway, kayak safety and other basics, and then put a kayak in the pool. That’s when I show them two different ways to get back in the boat after capsizing.

I was at a point in one presentation in which I was transitioning from the talk part to the pool part when a junior lifeguard raised his hand.

“If you capsize on the blueway, couldn’t you just stand up and climb back in.”

Insert rimshot sound here.

Good point, I told the lad.

And therein lies the beauty of our beautiful blueway. Lee County’s average water depth of a mere 4 feet makes our trail feel even safer and easier to use than we sometimes remember.
