Gone fishing. Er, uh, paddling

November 17, 2009

Thud, thump, whoops.

A redfish – apparently startled by my kayak sneaking up on it near marker No. 79 of the blueway – bolted on Monday morning. That’s not a first; our waters are teeming with fish and they often head for the mangroves when they spot you. But this was the first time a fish bolted right into the bow.

Like I said: Thud, thump, whoops.

Now, mind you, I’ve had manatees lumber beneath me and maybe bump the boat. But I'd never quite imagined a fish in shallow water capable of jamming into the kayak with force enough to hear and feel it.

Tally it up as another first on the blueway. Even when you re-paddle part of the 190-mile trail you’ve done before, something new always seems to happen.
