Explore Mound Key on Thanksgiving weekend

November 23, 2009

Here’s your chance to kayak to Mound Key, not get lost and learn about the native Calusas all in one outing.

Archaeologist Theresa Schober will team up with Jim Sernovitz, a master naturalist who also is a registered Lee County Parks & Recreation volunteer. Together they’re offering tours of Estero Bay.

Join them Saturday, Nov. 28, as well as on future dates (see below) at 9:30 a.m. to gain a new perspective on the expansive estuary system behind Fort Myers Beach.

The tour will focus on the how human societies through time have relied upon these waters and the life within them – including past and present inhabitants of Southwest Florida from the Calusa Indians to today.

Equipment and paddling instruction are provided for all tours. They depart from the Mound House, which is where Schober is the cultural resources director for the Town of Fort Myers Beach and where you can learn about Southwest Florida history without even leaving shore.

Also, check out the Mound House listing and the Mound Key listing on the Phase 1 (blue) map of the Calusa Blueway.

Tours are offered at $30 per person or $15 for students and Fort Myers Beach property owners. Tours last about two hours with proceeds benefiting restoration efforts at the Mound House. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Can’t make it Saturday after Turkey Day? Mark your calendar. Future tour dates include: Dec. 5, 12 and 19.
