Canoeists, kayakers share the “road”

[imagefield:left:0] [imagefield:left:1]Here’s a safety reminder from Steve Mevers, who is on the water here in Southwest Florida about as much as anybody. He’s Lt. Mevers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He’s also a powerboater, fly fisherman and kayaker. The guy loves the skinny water and fish that abound on the Calusa Blueway.
So his reminder is this: Remember even though you’re on a paddling trail when you use the Calusa Blueway, you are still on a waterway anyone can use if they can traverse shallow water.
It’s true: Many an angler’s honey hole is near a blueway marker. And commercial crabbers do well nudging into those shallow water to capture the luscious blue crabs that go to market.
His point: Be aware. Keep an eye out 360 degrees. That’s what boating safety officials preach – regardless of whether they’re talking to sailors, powerboaters or paddlers. Be safe and have fun out there.
